Turn your world right side up for Jesus!

Sermon: Acts 17:1-9 Turning the world upside down or right side up for Jesus?

A great revolution came when the disciples of Jesus like Paul and Silas travelled all over the known world to share the good news of Jesus. Wherever, they went they found that many people accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour and Lord. They also turn their world upside down through their message of Jesus the messiah. In fact, Paul and his team were putting the people’s life Right side up!

Happy News (Acts 17:1-3)

The gospel is the message of the happy or the good news of Jesus. Why this is the greatest message of all time? It is because of the Power of the cross where Jesus was sacrificed for our sins! Paul and the team went to the Synagogue, a Jews meeting place for worship for three Sabbaths which was like our Sunday, a day of worship in the church. It is because of the Resurrection of Jesus. Paul also explained how Jesus rose again from the dead on the third day per the scripture. Paul’s summary of the gospel message is recorded for us in 1 Corinthians 15:3-7. It is because Jesus Christ is the KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS: V. 3. “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ.” Or Messiah.

Happy people (Acts 17:4)

We see in our passage that people who received the good news of Jesus became Christians and joined Paul and Silas along with many God-fearing Greeks and a good number of prominent and influential women in the city. These were most happy people because they found new joy, hope, peace and meaning in their lives. The gospel of Jesus Christ turns the world upside down to turn them right side up for Jesus!

Hospitality (Acts 17:7)

The changed lives by Jesus Christ, open their hearts and homes for neighbours and Christian believers to express their joy, love and peace through hospitality. Here we see, Jason welcomed Paul and Silas and the team to stay, take rest and eat meal in his house. The hospitality by Jason was risky because he associated himself with Christian people like Paul and Silas. He was dragged and accused of having association with Paul and Silas. Ministry of hospitality is powerful and beautiful to share the good news of Jesus and encourage believers in their faith. The gospel of Jesus Christ turns the world upside down to turn them right side up for Jesus!

Hope in the hard times of hostility (Acts 17:5-9)

There is hope in our hard times of hostility from people today. In our passage, we see that Jews were very jealous with the success of the gospel preached by Paul and Silas. A house church was founded for Christian believer in the city of Thessalonica where Apostle Paul wrote a letter to the church to continue to grow in their faith in Jesus Christ.

Conclusion and application

We need people like Paul and Silas who will travel everywhere in our country to preach and proclaim that Jesus is the Saviour and Lord. We need to happy people to welcome and provide hospitality to God’s people for preaching the gospel. We can make our world upside down by sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ, but truly, we can make people ‘right side up’ for God’s glory.
