Mission Possible (Acts 16:1-10)

Introduction:

First, we need to be very clear that every Christian has a mission to share the good news of Jesus. This has been commissioned by Our Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 28:18-20, “Then Jesus came and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Is our Christian mission possible in this present generation with many challenges of various philosophies and point of views? Let us see.

  1. Mission Team (Acts 16:1-5)

Our Christian mission is possible only if we work together as a team. The team provides strength and encouragement to one another by supporting each other. A team needs a good leader to lead the team and provide a common direction. I always remembered about my lesson on leadership very early in my Christian life: “A leader knows where he/she is going and he/she is able to lead others where he/she is going.” Paul was the leader of the team, together with the team of Silas, Timothy and Luke. They made some difficult journeys to bring the good news of salvation to people. They travelled together in the ancient Roman empire.

  1. Missionary Direction (Acts 16:6-10)

Our Christian mission is possible when we have our missionary direction from the Holy Spirit. Every leader is human who provides the best possible direction and vision for the team. However, if the leader is not dependent upon the wisdom and direction of the Holy Spirit, the mission will be a failure. The Holy Spirit prevented Paul to go to a certain place to change their direction. Paul saw a vision of a man from Macedonia (Europe) to come and help him. The team leader Paul and his team mates concluded and made a common decision to go toward Macedonia and preach the good news of Jesus there.

Application

The Holy Spirit leads His workers to the right directions and opportunities for ministry. The principles that we can learn and apply are: (1) Clarity of direction for those who are already in service, (2) GOD SOMETIMES LEADS US TO THE RIGHT OPPORTUNITIES BY HINDERING US FROM THE WRONG ONES. (3) God leads us step by step in to the right direction, (4) Know God’s direction correctly and obey immediately, (5) Reality may be difference from the actual vision as we should understand the principle of following the missionary direction for the missionary team. Therefore, let us work together for the mission of the church here with the mission team with the missionary direction of the Holy Spirit. It is mission possible in our church as we worship, work and witness together for the glory of God!
