Pentecost power of the Holy Spirit
On the day of Pentecost, the promised Holy Spirit by Jesus came upon his 120 disciples. They were all filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. The day of Pentecost was the Jews festival in which God fearing people from all over the world came to the capital city of Jerusalem to celebrate the festival.
The name Pentecost (fiftieth) derived from the 50 days after the Passover festival. It was the feast of harvest. We can read the story of this festival in the Bible, in the Old Testament in the book of Exodus 23:16 & Deuteronomy 16:10.
God chose this extraordinary event of Pentecost day as a symbolic significance for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit with extraordinary power for ordinary people to witnesses the good news of Jesus to the whole world. It is wonderful to know that the birth of the church took place with the bumper harvest of souls. When Peter preached the good news of Jesus, 3000 people believed and joined the church. These people came out of darkness of sin into the marvellous light of Jesus Christ.
If you would like to receive the extraordinary power of the Holy Spirit to share the good news of Jesus, you can apply the principles given here in the book of Acts 2. We learn first of all that these 120 people were praying and waiting together in one place to receive the power of the Holy Spirit. Suddenly, on the day of Pentecost, they were filled with the Holy Spirit with the sound of rushing wind and fire. The flames of fire rested upon each of them. They were able to speak different languages to express the wonderful works of God. Secondly, they began to praise God by worshipping Jesus in different languages that even the crowd heard them. And thirdly, they all preached about the great work of God through Jesus Christ. Peter took the lead to explain the reason by a public speech. People were amazed and perplexed to see what was happening with the disciples of Jesus. Though some of the them made fun of the disciples, accusing them to be drunk with wine. However, when Peter explained the reason and preached the good news of Jesus, about 3000 people became the disciples of Jesus and joined the church. What a wonderful way of the birth of church with the extraordinary outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
Let us all ask God to fill us afresh with the power of the Holy Spirit to share the good news of Jesus and continue to live our Christian life in the power of the Holy Spirit. May God bless you with the power of the Holy Spirit right now in a new and fresh way!
