Why great commission is called great commission? This word is not found in the Bible. However, this is rightly called the great commission because Jesus gave this commission to his disciples for making disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them all that he has commanded them (Matthew 28:19-20). This is the greatest commission of Jesus to all his disciples in the world. The last words of any person who says goodbye is very important. The risen Christ before leaving for heaven gave a very important commission to his disciples. This was the greatest mission for which he came to this earth. He chose his twelve disciples, spend about three years with them to train them by teaching and through the example of his life. All the way, he kept on explaining his most important mission of life. The Lord Jesus Christ had a master plan to train these disciples to spread the good news of the kingdom of God on earth. He summarised his mission by asking them to make disciples of all nations. Notice, that he didn’t called them be Christians because this term first time was given by the society of that time when the church came in to existence in Antioch city. Therefore, everyone is called to be the disciples of Jesus Christ. The disciples are followers of their masters. The disciples are supposed to make others as disciples. This is the master plan of evangelism that Jesus has given to all his present day’s disciples also.
How should we make people disciples if we ourselves are not disciples of Jesus? How to become a disciples of Jesus? We need learn from Jesus himself. He first of all went around preaching about the kingdom of God and healing the sick. He gave a call to his chosen disciples and asked them to join with him in his mission. There are three major ways that he trained his disciples:
He invested his time with them. He spent about three years with his disciples.
He preached the good news with them. He showed them how to share the good news.
He healed the people with power and authority. He showed them to use power and authority.
The process of disciple making is to help people to have a closer walk with Jesus so that they may become more like him. We help people to seek for others to share the gospel and help others to become disciples. This process of disciple making is one to one basis. If every Christian believer would focus on just one person in a year to make disciple and help him or her to make others to become disciples than soon almost the whole world will reached for Jesus.
Before we plan to obey the great commission, we need to follow the great commandment of Jesus. That is: ‘Love your God with all your mind, with all your soul and with all heart.’ Loving God with all our total being will only motivate and inspire us to obey the great commission. Jesus died for the sins of the world on the cross. He rose again from the dead to assure us that we can receive eternal life through him. Let’s all be obedient to the great commission of Jesus Christ!
